New Music Friday favourites – 6 January 2017

It’s the first #newmusicfriday of the new year and a big sigh of relief all round if you will, because there are at least four strong new releases that make up for the recent drought on our pop landscape.

Flor – Hold On

Flor are Zach, Dylan, McKinley and Kyle and, if you caught Halsey and BØRNS live in the UK last February, you may have seem the LA-hailing band opening for them. They’ve released one EP called Sounds already, but new single Hold On is one heck of a celestial serenade, bursting with synths and dreamy vocals.

Sia – Move Your Body

This is the one from This Is Acting which Sia originally wrote for Shakira. You’ve got to wonder what Shakira was thinking, turning down one of the world’s most successful contemporary songwriters as this would be right up her street and could have been her best single since Waka Waka. Goes without saying that Sia hits it out of the ballpark.

Kiesza – Dearly Beloved

Three years after topping the UK top 40 with Hideaway, Kiesza returns with Dearly Beloved – the first single from the upcoming full length follow up to her 2014 album Sound of a Woman. The bedrock of this new track is the emotional power behind Kiesza’s vocals which absolutely soar here. Then there’s the production work which you can thank the ever reliable Stuart Price for. The Canadian singer-songwriter has also been sharing some next level artwork for this new era on Twitter. Hail her return.

Naives – Crystal Clear

London-based duo Naives release their self-titled debut album on 27 January, and the Anglo/French outfit’s new single does a fine job of fulfilling the promise on their Facebook page to bring ‘super-fresh grooves’ to the table. Crystal Clear is a fresh and vibrant pop gem that keeps you on your toes, packing in kaleidoscopic synth bursts, funky guitar licks and a mix of tempo-shifting percussion beats and electronics.

Throw in to the mix are two new Ed Sheeran singles. Then the Madeleine Dopico single, while technically not released today, is well worth a listen too as are the latest songs from Dua Lipa, Snakehips and MØ, LÉON, Elbow, London Grammar, Walk Off The Earth, Niki and the Dove, and The xx.

Austin Mahone leans heavily on Modjo #1 Lady for his new single, erm… Lady but it’s worth a listen for Pitbull excitedly singing about “sexing you crazy”.
