We are still reeling from the absolute magic of her first two releases – Cold War and I Ain’t Goin Nowhere – and this latest offering from American up-and-coming star Kiah Victoria doesn’t disappoint at all, as she delivers another stunning masterpiece of contemporary soul.
Hollow is armed with a rich arrangement of spiralling piano keys and amplifying percussion, that provides a powerful, full-bodied backdrop for Kiah’s centre-stage, superstar vocals. Inspiring lyrics are delivered part-spoken and part-sung, and backed by cascades of bursting ad-libs, all of which loads the intensifying track with a sense of raw honesty and unbridled spontaneity, while bolstering its emotional sentiment.
“This song was wrote two days after the Paris attack” explains Kiah about the song’s background. “Everything still felt super surreal and hopeless and I wanted to capture that. I also wanted to make something joy giving. The amazing thing is that we don’t have to be as terrible as we’re capable of being.”
Hollow is the latest taster from the Brooklyn native’s upcoming EP Everybody which will be released 23 September and accompanied by a headline show at Pianos in her hometown of New York.
If you’re going to put your bets on someone who is a serious contender when it comes to pacing the way for the future of soul music, do NOT make the mistake of overlooking Kiah Victoria.
