This week I was introduced to the music of SEARLS, whose debut EP Follow will be released on 17 June.
Lead cut Demons gives us a good glimpse in to his style of ambient, Jessie Ware and Brian Eno-influenced music. Producer LJ Looper takes a slow-burn approach, pitting the Irish newcomer’s yearning, soul-flecked croon against a backdrop of atmospheric backing calls, under-the-surface synths and foreboding electronic percussion. The gradual build gives SEARLS plenty of space to shine. Written about his own experience following the death of a loved one, his lamenting vocals simmer with such haunting intensity that it’s hard not to find yourself caught up in it all.
“Life is short,” SEARLS said to me before posing the one question that he wants to leave listeners with. “We all struggle for perfection but are we living?”
