Off the back of the breathtaking brilliance of last year’s underrated Give up the Ghost, Ariana and the Rose has released two brand new songs to iTunes. To coincide with its launch, she’s also shared the stunning visual for EP title track Survival of the Fittest which is joined on the collection by roller disco break up number Dirty Dancing. Yup, you heard that right. “It’s most literally about breaking up with someone in a roller disco,” says the New York native, whose real name is Ariana DiLorenzo. “I love matching a bit of playfulness with heartbreak, you have to laugh through it somehow.”
The new songs are the latest fruits of Ariana’s studio sessions with Tom Fuller (Patrick Wolf, Chemical Brothers) who also worked on Give up the Ghost. There’s a bit of a CHVRCHES vibe to the electronic swirls of Survival of the Fittest but this is no copycat performance – with her charged creativity flowing throughout, from the visual’s stunning lightshow to the emotional nuance she invests in every lyric she sings, Ariana more than holds her own.
