Laura Mvula will release her second studio LP The Dreaming Room on 17 June via RCA Records and earlier today she shared the official audio for her latest promotional single, and album closing track, Phenomenal Woman on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show.
The empowering, post-relationship recovery narrative was the last that Mvula wrote for the upcoming follow up to her Mercury-nominated debut Sing to the Moon, and it came about after she woke one morning and read the acclaimed Maya Angelou-penned poem of the same name.
Like the record’s two previous cuts, the Nile Rodgers-produced lead single Overcome and Wretch 32 collab People, Mvula’s Phenomenal Woman sees her continuing to seize every opportunity to play with more vibrant, energetic sounds, styles and instruments (she takes on the keytar for the first time here). And, according to a recent, very honest interview with Tom Laminr for The Guardian, the experiences she’s been through have resulted in what she’s describing as “a beast of an album”.
