As well as leading to him being billed as Australia’s answer to Bon Iver, Hayden Calnin’s first two EPs have drawn comparisons between the Melbourne musician’s material and that from bands like Beach House and M83. One listen to Cut Love though and it’s clear that he needn’t worry about whether his upcoming dual album release will be able match those lofty expectations.
The sprawling title track from first instalment Cut Love Pt 1. shows Calnin in full creative mode, and it’s no surprise considering the album was initially inspired by a request from Brit award-winning contemporary choreographer Lukas McFarlane who was looking for new music to perform to. Self-produced and recorded in his home studio, the breathtakingly ambient track also benefits from being mixed by Tim Carr who’s previously worked with fellow Australian Matt Corby.
“Creating Cut Love was very much about writing and recording what I felt was true to who I was as a musical artist,” says Calnin. “It’s a very honest piece that doesn’t necessarily adhere to classic convention in modern songwriting.”
