It’s been over ten years since either Destiny’s Child or Brandy troubled the UK singles chart but that could all be set to change thanks to this much-anticipated new dance track from UK production duo 99 Souls.
The two Billboard chart-topping R&B acts feature on 99 Souls’ exhilarating mash up The Girl Is Mine, which samples Brandy’s huge 1998 collaboration with Monica, The Boy Is Mine and Beyoncé, Kelly and Michelle’s 2005 single Girl.
Brandy opens and closes the track with “Excuse me, can I please talk to you for a minute” – the line that started the sparring with her love rival on her timeless 1998 duet – whilst the song’s spliced up title is the key hook here. She also pops up later with a very satisfactory middle eight.
Meanwhile, although one of Destiny’s Child’s more underrated hits, the trio’s last UK single Girl fits in brilliantly; Beyoncé’s sass and lyrics about sisterly solidarity spliced and drenched over a backdrop of chiming and popping, club-ready beats – and who can’t resist the memories of that Sex and the City themed music video?
Today’s official release of The Girl is Mine has been on the cards ever since a bootleg version of the track started doing the rounds at the end of the 2014, and wound up being playlisted by Pete Tong as one of his Essential New Tunes. Licensing issues and what not have meant that it’s taken this long to get it out there, but here it is via Spotify and here’s the iTunes link.
This is primed and ready to explode.
