UK house duo 99 Souls have announced the release date of their long-awaited dancefloor mash up The Girl is Mine, ten months after an early version of the the track first started doing the rounds after Pete Tong premiered it as one of his Essential New Tunes.
The otherwise mysterious duo announced on social media earlier today that the track will officially be released to iTunes on 6 November.
An obvious reason for the delay would be the fact that there will have been some legal checkboxes to tick first – after all, the track interpolates samples of Destiny’s Child’s rather underrated 2005 top 10 hit Girl (the one with the SATC style video) and Brandy & Monica’s 1998 worldwide smash The Boy Is Mine.
One very good R&B jam and one bonafide chart classic, given a bang on trend, club-ready makeover, and hey presto – it looks like we may well just see both the Independent Women and Afrodisiac stars back in the charts in a matter of weeks. No such luck for Monica mind, who is absent from the co-crediting, most likely as Brandy co-wrote and co-produced The Boy Is Mine whilst Monica was a mere featured artist. “Excuse me, can I please talk to you for a minute…?”
On their Soundcloud page, 99 Souls say that they hope “to bring the songwriting of Dylan, Marvin, Hal and Kanye to the dance floor“. With Bey, K-Ro, Michelle and Brandy already done, it looks like these two could be a winning formula to look out for.
Preorder The Girl Is Mine from iTunes now (here’s the link), and listen to the teaser up top. Oh, and of course, the videos for those originals are right below.
