The chances are, if you don’t live in New Zealand, you won’t have heard this brilliant single from Avalanche City – aka Auckland-based singer-songwriter Dave Baxter.
And that’s truly a sad thing because Inside Out is by far one of the most spine-tinglingly beautiful and emotionally-resonating releases that I’ve heard this year. A sleeper hit here in NZ, the acoustic folk number received its first outing back in April during a mesmerising live performance on X Factor but it wasn’t until earlier this month – eight or so weeks later – that it secured the singer-songwriter his second NZ chart topper – his first being the 2011 single Love Love Love.
Taken from Avalanche City’s recently released sophomore album We Are For The Wild Places, Inside Out is an emotional tale of a broken relationship – one that digs deep under the skin and brings to the fore its aching sense of irreparable loss and desolation, via a combination of expertly-crafted musical arrangements and Baxter’s immersive delivery and heart-rending lyrics.
