LA-based singer-songwriter HANA has premiered the lyric video for her new single Avalanche – the follow up to her debut single Clay which generated a healthy amount of internet buzz thanks to some social media sharing from folk like Grimes, Purity Ring and Lorde.
Produced by Hana (her surname is Pestle) with her boyfriend Michael Diamond (aka Blood Diamonds), who also helped her to hone her sound, Avalanche is a transfixing piece of music, set against sparse percussion and electronics that give full rein to the Montana native’s crystalline vocals which, she tells Nylon, was pretty much the point.
“I love the song so much, just because I was experimenting with using my voice as the main basis of the song—my voice is what is making the chords of the song. That’s really exciting, because I think the voice is such an alien instrument; we all have one and they all sound different.
“The song itself is about my inability to say no and learning about becoming a more assertive person,” she adds. “I’m a people-pleaser to a fault, so this song is about saying no if I don’t want to do something, and becoming a more powerful person.”
There will be an EP later this year, but for now you can download Avalanche from iTunes.
