As the voice behind the sound of McAlmont & Butler, Mr David McAlmont is responsible for two of the most enduring tracks of the 1990s and indeed two of the finest songs to have blessed the UK charts in the last twenty years. Both Yes and You Do remain exquisite pieces of musical and sonic grandeur, the like of which you don’t come across often.
Now the man with one of the most impressive falsettos on the UK music scene is giving away a free download of a track that was borne from the recording sessions of his latest musical project Fingersnap.
Blackbirds was first performed by McAlmont and man-at-the-keys Guy Davies during a series of live gigs back in 2012 when they were promoting their debut EP Smokehouse and it quickly found itself becoming a favourite with audiences.
The track takes its lyrics from a poem written by McAlmont shortly after the release of Smokehouse about his “changing reaction to a blackbird that woke him in the morning“. Despite not being written with the intention of being released, Blackbirds soon found itself paired up with a beautiful piano-driven melody composed by Davies during a time of emotional upheaval.
“An accidental creation” that “emerged from a despairing place“, says the singer of the intrinsically beautiful and melodious song which was last week accompanied by an animated video produced by Lewis Campbell, that McAlmont describes as “a moving and intuitive addition to our blackbird’s flight“.
