Alanis Morissette: Guardian (Official Lyrics Video)
Canadian songstress Alanis Morissette has unveiled the lyrics video for the first single to be taken from her forthcoming album.
‘Guardian’ will receive its first American radio airplay on 11 May, and will be released on iTunes in the States four days later. If you were hoping for an angst-ridden Alanis, you’ll be disappointed.
The new album, ‘Havoc and Bright Lights’, is the first since her 2008 LP, ‘Flavors Of Entanglement’, and clearly represented a turbulent time in the singer’s life. Whilst it’s one of my personal favourites of her back catalogue, tracks such as ‘Moratorium’ and ‘Citizen Of The Planet’ brim with sadness, desperation and frustration.
Since then, Morissette has married and given birth, and that change of lifestyle is definitely reflected in the more positive sound of ‘Guardian’. An upbeat chorus about protecting the one she loves, is this Mother Morissette speaking?
Perhaps, broadly speaking. However the verses ensure that all can relate to the need for nurture or solace, when times are hard.
It’s definitely a grower, that gets better with each listen.
Guy Sigsworth and Joe Chiccarelli have taken on production duties for the new album, and I am looking forward to seeing what the rest of the record sounds like when it’s released on 28 August.
